A Simple Change for A Big Impact on Safety

We installed illuminated school bus stop arms on our main routes, and the difference has been dramatic

First Light’s Fully Illuminated stop arms greatly enhance visibility, reducing stop-arm violations and improving student safety. This simple upgrade makes a real difference in protecting children as they load and unload the school bus, especially in low-light conditions.

We recently purchased 8 new buses, and we ordered the First Light illuminated signs and stop signs for them. We knew we wanted greater visibility, both during the dark times and during the day. These signs have made a tremendous difference. From a great distance, there is no doubt to other drivers that there is a school bus in front of them.

We have also started to put them on our existing buses as well, beginning with the routes that have a greater likelihood of a stop-arm infraction.

All new bus purchases going forward will include First Light signs.

First Light Safety’s solutions have been a great addition to our fleet. The increased visibility really stands out, and I’ve seen how it helps other drivers stay aware around our buses. It’s one more way we’re working to keep our kids safe.

The School District of Osceola County, Florida, made a commitment a year ago to enhance the visibility of our school bus fleet. Today I believe that school buses simply blend into the ‘visual background noise’ of most urban communities. We are competing for the attention of other drivers who may be visually distracted. We look forward to a day when all of our school buses are equipped with First Light products.

As a continued commitment to the safety of our students and community, New Hanover County Schools invested in equipping an additional 60 school buses with First Light’s illuminated stop arms and school bus signs over the 23-24 school year. We now have a total of 80 buses in our fleet illuminated. The signs have vastly improved visibility of the buses and their stops in both our rural and urban areas, keeping all of our students safer. Bus drivers love the brightness of the stop arms, the way they draw car drivers’ attention, and the visibility of the illuminated signs to allow students, parents, and traffic to know they are approaching.

We love the illuminated signs and stop-arms on our yellow buses, but we also plan to continue outfitting these activity bus lights on all our new purchases. We implemented the illuminated school bus sign on our bus, which last year had the most stop arm violations. This year, the same bus on the same route has not had anyone run the stop arm. Being a very rural school district, the illuminated school bus sign is the first thing you see coming down the road, and it is visible from over a mile away. We are discussing installing more of these on our other route buses.

Drivers are so impressed with the visibility; they’re now requesting buses with the First Light Stop Arm installed. Traffic now has ample time to notice a stopped bus. Where traffic was once passing on the reds, we now have safe loading and unloading for our students. All new buses will be equipped with First Light Stop Arms!
